Montpelier – Today, the Vermont League of Conservation Voters Education Fund (VTLCVEF), in collaboration with the members of the Vermont Environmental Collaborative, announced its 2011 Common Agenda.

At a press conference in the State House VTLCVEF Executive Director, Andrea Stander, presented the list of goals and priorities that the organizations who make up the Vermont Environmental Collaborative will be pursuing through public education and advocacy efforts during the balance of the 2011 legislative session. Members of the Collaborative provided comments and responded to questions on each of four priority issue areas:

Securing Vermont’s Clean Energy Future

“An affordable clean energy future is within our reach.  Strengthening our commitment to energy efficiency and new renewables is necessary to provide a safer, cleaner and more prosperous Vermont for future generations,” - Sandra Levine, Conservation Law Foundation

"With new leadership in the Governor's office we have an opportunity to create a clean energy economy.  Vermonters are ready to be part of the solution, businesses are ready to put people to work, we need consistent leadership from State Government and we'll see this sector take off." - James Moore, Clean Energy Program Director, Vermont Public Interest Research Group

Promoting Sustainable Economic Development, Conservation and Smart Growth

“Public investment into agriculture, economic development, conservation and smart growth is a proven strategy. The Vermont Housing and Conservation Board puts these investments to work in our communities.   The Governor's VHCB recommendation for next year delivers a sustained, strong investment in these values.” – Adam Necrason, Advocate for Smart Growth Vermont

Permitting that Serves all Vermonters

"Vermont's environmental permitting system needs to be updated. It should be more protective of the environment, more citizen-friendly and more integrated. It's time to look at an overhaul.” - Brian Shupe, Deputy Director, Vermont Natural Resources Council

Strengthening Vermont’s Commitment to Recycling

"It's time that Vermont renew its commitment to recycling by updating the Bottle Bill - our state's most successful recycling program - to include non-carbonated beverage containers. Not only is this good policy, but it enjoys the support of the vast majority of Vermonters." - Charity Carbine-March, Environmental Health Advocate, Vermont Public Interest Research Group

The Vermont League of Conservation Voters Education Fund coordinates the Environmental Collaborative and its Common Agenda as a service to Vermont citizens concerned about public policies that affect conservation and environmental issues and their elected representatives. Recognizing the critical connections among their priority issues, the members of the Collaborative strive to achieve innovative legislative solutions that benefit Vermont’s people, environment and economy.

Founded in 1999, the Vermont League of Conservation Voters Education Fund seeks to educate the public about conservation and environmental protection efforts. It works to encourage, through education and research, public policies that protect the environment and conserve natural resources.
